A Growing Business in Writing

Did you know that a work from home business can grow over a short period of time? Growing a business in writing is relatively easy if you have basic writing skills. Create a foundation of success by following a few tips below:

Create a Work Portfolio

Having a work portfolio is important for any career option including writing. Having solid samples in writing is important and will provide potential employers with a “view” of your work.

Create a Following

If you enjoy writing, create a following. This will take an investment in time, but can provide you with rewards in the long run. Many online businesses who hire writers will also ask for links to web content you have authored and written.

One example is Media Piston. When you apply for their writing jobs, they ask for three links to see your work which is available online. They also have you create a personal profile based on your writing experience.

Letting Others Know you are Available

When you begin your work from home writing venture, it is important to let others know you are available. People often get busy and need to be reminded that you are available to work for them.

In the beginning, you may not have many people to remind, but once you create a foundation of “writing service” availability – you will have more leads to follow.

Selling your Skills

Another option when working online creating writing content is to let others know if you have other skills available. For example, if you let an employer know you also have skills in creating Power Point Presentations, then you are letting them know of other skills you can offer.

Taking time in your day, or work week to promote your writing business will give opportunity for growth. Every “seed” you plant can spring into a full grown plant. It is the same with holding a writing career.

Learn from Experiences and Don’t Give Up!

Working from home is full of adventures. The adventures begin when you prepare yourself to look for new online opportunities to become gainfully employed. For some, they will find work right away. For others, they will have to continue to “dig for gold” in their work from home pursuit.

The most important thing to remember is to learn from your experiences and do not give up in your journey. If you truly desire to make this work – then determine to do what it takes to win and succeed! Set your priorities and don’t look back!

How can you learn from your experiences? How are your interviews going? Are there things which can be improved upon within the process. Maybe, you were not as prepared for the meeting as you should have been. If you were applying for a writing position which involves writing for an electronics online  web store - you needed to have articles prepared showing your best work which was related to the online opportunity.

Do you have an online job that is not working out? Well, the nice thing about working from home is that you are your own boss. You can search for and find the jobs which are right for you. It may take a little bit of time for some, but it is possible!

Do you Have the Patience to Work from Home?

Working from home can be filled with wonderful opportunities! It can also be filled with challenges at times. Hopefully, you are a person filled with patience! For some working from home will provide much more rewards than “headaches.”

Working from the home can provide flexibility, freedom, as well as other advantages. What about some of the “headaches?” Well, for some the interview process may be stressful. Interviewing online can occur in a variety of ways. Each employer may expect something different within the process.

Finding the work you desire can be harder for some than others. This will depend on the person’s resources as well as gaining leads to the best places to apply to.

Creating a nice resume and cover letter is not some people’s forte. Personally, I really do not like to deal with them! :0)

No matter what you may consider a “headache” within the process, your outlook on the adventure will help you along the way. Patience is needed in every area of securing an online job. For me personally, having the dream and desire to work from home has been like taking a dose of Tylenol – lessening any real “headaches” of finding online work.

The Ability to Relax While Working From Home

When working from home, it is important to have the ability to relax. Without relaxation, tensions and stressors will take over your life. Working from home brings many advantage to the family. Although, as moms when we know there is work to be done – sometimes it is hard to leave it alone.

For example, when you are a mom who works from home – you may find yourself checking your business email 10 times in a day. Make it a rule to check it at certain times of the day. If you work from home four hours each day, then do what you can to stay within the guidelines. Do not allow work “thinking” to continually enter your mind when you are visiting friends, or doing things with the family. It may be necessary to break your habits in this respect – but you can do it.

As a working mom, you must be able to relax and “leave work.” Just as if you were leaving a physical place of work – you need to be able to mentally disconnect from your work during other times of the day. Otherwise, you will find yourself reaching burnout mode when it could have been avoided!

How can you take some times to relax? Here are a few suggestions for you:

  • Leave the house
  • Turn off the house/cell phone
  • Shut the computer down (keeps you from going back to do more work which can be done at another time)
  • Have dinner out with your spouse, or best friend
  • Hire a babysitter for the evening, or trade kid sitting with a neighbor
There are simple ways to relax and take a mental break from work. It is necessary to balance work with down time.

Time Management – Working from Home

When working from home, time management will allow you to manage time and scheduling more successfully. If you use tips which are helpful in saving time, you will be able to spend more time with your family and friends. Or, you will be able to add more work projects to your busy schedule, increasing your profits.

Managing work scheduling is important in many work from home situations. Some moms will find jobs with set hours such as working 8 am to noon three days each week. But, what if you are working on projects without specifically scheduled hours?

If you are hired to work for several employers and they desire projects to be completed at various times – then time management can become more critical for you and your business. Keep a list of ongoing work assignments along with their due dates. This will help you to ensure each one is completed on time. You can prioritize each assignment – scheduling the most important ones first into your work schedule.

Be sure to allow time for the unexpected, or emergencies. Completing as much work as possible in the beginning of the week will allow for more flexibility toward the weekend. Every work from home mom must create a system which works well for her and her family!
